Fruitless Fig
Street photography, ongoing

When I go to meet a world to photograph, I’m drawn to the beauty of the everyday; the harmony of social human nature that’s universal across cultures. These moments are often overlooked, and to find and capture them starts with noticing.

In the Bible, the fig tree is a recurring motif. In one parable, a barren fig tree is spared by its owner and granted one more year. It gets another chance to yield fruit, not deemed lost just yet.

That is what I try to keep in mind as I practice this style of photography. I go out knowing there’s good chance I’ll return home without a single worthy picture. It’s easy to forget, but the fruitless fig helps me remember to hold tomorrow in hope. So when my efforts finally do bear fruit – if I’m so fortunate that day – it is truly sweet.

“All there is to thinking is seeing something noticeable which makes you see something you weren’t noticing which makes you see something that isn’t even visible.” — Norman Maclean
